Pets can bring incredible joy to our lives, but taking care of them can be a physically painful process!
As a dog and cat owner living with rheumatoid with arthritis, and as an occupational therapist, here are some of my best tips for protecting sore joints while caring for a pet – what would you add to the list?
Tip 1: Hands Free Leash
Try a hands free leash, if your balance is good and your dog isn’t too big!
Tip 2: Raised litter box
Try raising the kitty litter box if your knees or hips hurt while bending!
Tip 3: Pet Food Storage
Pour large packages of pet food or little into smaller containers to protect joints while carrying and opening containers.
Tip 4: Choose your dog harness carefully
Use a dog harness that is easy to put on and take off – some closures are easier than others! I also sometimes leave my dog’s harness on for long periods of time to minimize the total amount of times I need to squeeze it on and off.
Tip 5 – Long Handled Scoopers
Use a long handled poop scoop if hips or knees hurt while bending, and also to minimize strain on your small finger joints.
Tip 6: Enjoy the bond
Enjoy the psychological benefits of having a pet to comfort you!
Tip 7: Train dog not to pull
Train your dog in “loose leash walking” so they don’t yank or pull on your hands.
