Earlier this month, I flew to Denver for a Rheumatology Research Foundation event – here are the 3 arthritis hand stretches I did on the airplane to prevent hand stiffness, as an occupational therapist living with rheumatoid arthritis:
- ✅ 1. “Tendon gliding” for finger flexors and extensors
- ✅ 2. Thumb opposition to keep the thumb joints lubricated
- ✅ 3. Finger “jazz hands” or snow angels – keeps the finger adductors and abductors moving smoothly
I also wore compression gloves which can reduce hand stiffness and swelling.
What are your best tips for surviving air travel with rheumatoid arthritis or similar conditions?
Let me know, and look forward to more news from the Foundation’s annual Investigators’ Meeting, where amazing rheumatology researchers to share progress updates on their projects and discuss ways to develop better treatments and cures for rheumatic diseases!
