You know what they say, never waste time on people who negatively judge you for taking a medication like methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis! Inspired by some of my fellow rheumatoid arthritis friends on social media, I’ve started listening to fun music and dressing up for injections just to make the experience more palatable.

“What’s it like to be on methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis?” is probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have!

I know that starting a new medication can be scary, especially if you’ve had pressure from friends and family to manage your condition without medication. If the medication shamers are getting you down, just remember:

  • ✅ There’s no shame in taking a medication that’s been shown for decades to be effective in slowing down disease progression and preventing IRREVERSIBLE joint damage (citation: Jeffrey Sparks, 2019, Annals of Internal Medicine).
  • ✅We can’t control how people judge us but we CAN control how we respond and the amount of weight / importance we give their judgments. When you feel confident in your treatment plan, others’ judgments will have less impact!
  • ✅“Natural is better” or the “appeal to nature” is known as a logical fallacy, or error in thinking. There’s nothing wrong with taking medication and it’s possible to feel gratitude rather than fear when taking your meds!

I’ve been taking methotrexate for over 20 years – if you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments!
