In 2018, I teamed up with photographer @jesskeenerphoto to create an Invisible Illness Photoshoot – click through the slideshow above to see all ten images.

I was inspired by a photo I had seen on Instagram of a woman who looked “healthy” but was surrounded by syringes and medication bottles. It captured something so many of us live with: you can *be* sick even if you don’t *look* sick.

I wanted to show my version of that reality, and also the piece that’s harder to express: the ups and downs.

With conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, one day I might be swing dancing, playing with my kid, or feeling like my exuberant self. The next, I might be stuck in bed, too fatigued to move—let alone document it. Additionally, I have struggled at times to explain to my young son that “some owies don’t get better.”

I’m sharing these images again today in hopes they’ll continue to spread awareness about what it means to live with a hidden illness.

Big thanks again to Jessica Keener for helping bring this vision to life. 💜
